Tour Itinerary

Your Dolomites adventure begins in Alta Badia, a collection of charming Ladin villages tucked beneath the pale towers of the Dolomites.

Check into your comfortable 4-star hotel, collect your comprehensive information pack with detailed route suggestions and maps, and take time to become familiar with it all, then settle in for the evening.

The slopes are calling, and tomorrow they’re all yours.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Alta Badia

After breakfast, head to the slopes of Alta Badia, where the lifts will deliver you to wide, sunny slopes with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. With 130 kilometers of varied terrain at your feet, you can ski at whatever pace and level suits you today.

Feeling confident already? The legendary Gran Risa awaits. This black run, site of the annual World Cup giant slalom, is one of the most technically demanding slopes in the Alps. The Gran Risa’s north-facing orientation keeps it in shadow most of the day, creating an icy, fast surface that has humbled even World Cup champions. The famous “cat’s bumps” added in 2005 made it even more technically demanding.

For lunch, your information pack highlights several outstanding rifugi. Perhaps you’ll choose Club Moritzino at 2,100 meters, known for its gourmet collaborations, or Ütia Bioch Piz Sorega, home to Europe’s highest wine cellar. Alta Badia’s “Taste for Skiing” initiative means you’re never far from exceptional food – even at high altitude.

The afternoon is yours to explore. The Armentarola descent is particularly beautiful, or you might venture toward the Santa Croce area for quieter, scenic runs. By evening, return to your hotel for a well-earned dinner.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Alta Badia

Your pre-arranged transfer delivers you to Plan de Corones (Kronplatz), where wide-open, panoramic slopes await.

Take the modern lifts to the 2,275-meter summit, and you’ll understand why Kronplatz is beloved by skiers and boarders alike. The slopes here are confidence-building and exhilarating – long, perfectly groomed cruisers where you can really let your edges run.

At the summit, don’t miss the striking Messner Mountain Museum Corones, designed by Zaha Hadid. This architectural masterpiece, embedded into the mountain itself, offers panoramic viewing windows and a fascinating exploration of traditional mountaineering history. It’s the perfect spot for lunch at a nearby rifugio, combining cutting-edge design with breathtaking alpine views.

In the afternoon, your transfer returns you to your hotel in Alta Badia.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Alta Badia

Today brings the highlight of the week: Marmolada, known as the Queen of the Dolomites. Following your route instructions, ski from Alta Badia through Arabba, where you’ll warm up on a few challenging runs before reaching the cable car at Malga Ciapela.

The modern gondola system transports you to 3,265 meters – Punta Rocca, the summit of Marmolada Glacier.

Now comes La Bellunese, the legendary 12-kilometer descent. What makes La Bellunese particularly special is its position as the southernmost major glacier ski run in the Alps. Its unique microclimate and southern exposure mean it often enjoys brilliant sunshine even in midwinter, creating a skiing experience unlike the more shaded northern glacier runs found in Switzerland or Austria.

Take your time on this iconic descent. The upper glacier section is wide and flowing, perfect for long, sweeping turns. As you descend, the terrain gradually steepens and narrows. Midway down, consider stopping at one of the refuge terraces – the views back up to the glacier faces are stunning.

You can make multiple runs if energy allows. Each descent reveals something new – different light, different snow, different perspectives on this massive mountain.

By mid-afternoon, your pre-arranged transfer brings you to Val Gardena, where your next hotel awaits. Tonight, you’re dining in a new valley, experiencing the subtle variations in Ladin culture and cuisine.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Val Gardena

Your first morning in Val Gardena invites exploration. Following your information pack’s suggestions, consider starting with the Val Gardena Ronda circuit, which winds through the villages of Selva, Santa Cristina, and Ortisei. This scenic route offers beautifully varied skiing – wide groomers, tree-lined descents, and dramatic views of the Sassolungo and Odle mountain ranges.

Val Gardena is home to the legendary Saslong downhill, the site of annual World Cup races since 1969. The Saslong downhill is famous for producing surprise winners – more unexpected victors than any other World Cup venue. The course’s notorious “Camel Humps” – three consecutive jumps where racers can fly up to 80 meters through the air, and the technical “Ciaslat Meadow” section has ended many favorites’ hopes while launching unknown athletes to glory.

While the full race course is extremely challenging, you can ski sections of it and experience the terrain that has tested champions for over five decades.

If you’re feeling adventurous, your pack also suggests a detour to Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high-altitude plateau. This vast, gently rolling meadow offers a uniquely peaceful skiing experience – wide-open space, sunshine, and a sense of serene isolation.

Lunch at a traditional rifugio is a must. Val Gardena’s mountain huts are renowned for their warm hospitality and excellent cuisine, perhaps a steaming bowl of barley soup with smoked bacon, or handmade pasta with wild mushrooms.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Val Gardena

The final day of skiing brings the tour’s grand finale: the Sellaronda. This 40-kilometer circuit loops around the mighty Sella Massif, connecting four valleys and four mountain passes in one continuous ski day.

The beauty of the Sellaronda lies in its variety. You’ll ski through Alta Badia, Arabba, Val di Fassa, and back into Val Gardena, each valley offering different terrain, different views, and subtly different cultural touches. The four passes – Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Sella – provide dramatic high-altitude crossings with panoramic views.

The Sellaronda is as much about the journey and the mountain culture as it is about the skiing.

By afternoon, you complete the loop, arriving back in Val Gardena with a deep sense of satisfaction. Few ski experiences in the world match the Sellaronda for its combination of spectacular terrain, cultural immersion, and pure adventure. Tonight’s farewell dinner is a celebration, six days of independent exploration, countless memorable runs, and the satisfaction of having navigated four of the Dolomites’ most iconic ski areas entirely on your own terms.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Val Gardena

After breakfast, your Dolomites ski safari comes to an end. Depart at your leisure, carrying with you the memories of legendary slopes, glacier descents, gourmet mountain huts, and the unique satisfaction of having explored it all at your own pace.

Arrivederci – until next winter!

View Tour

This tour is designed for intermediate skiers comfortable on red (medium) runs. More experienced skiers will be able to take advantage of a huge amount of challenging terrain and runs. Apart from skiing ability, you must be confident in navigating ski areas independently. You should be able to read piste maps and manage longer descents in varied conditions. Some days involve significant mileage, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful.

Both tours follow the same itinerary and include the same accommodations, meals, transfers, and logistics. The difference is that you ski independently rather than with a guide. You receive a comprehensive information pack with detailed route suggestions, maps, tips, mountain hut recommendations, and 24-hour emergency contacts. It’s ideal for confident skiers who prefer to explore at their own pace.

Yes! If you’d like the expertise of a local guide for a particular day(s) – perhaps for the Marmolada glacier or to discover off-piste terrain, this can be arranged as an optional extra. Contact us for pricing and availability.

You have 24-hour phone support throughout your trip. If you have any issues – whether you’re unsure of a route, running late to your hut accommodation, or need assistance – simply call the support line.

The information pack also includes clear maps and route descriptions for each day.

Yes, 3rd party insurance for all users of Alpine ski slopes is compulsory in Italy. You must have valid liability insurance that covers skiing.

This insurance is required to cover your civil liability for damages or injuries you accidentally cause to a third party or their property while skiing or snowboarding on the slopes.

Every person (skiers, snowboarders, telemarkers, and tobogganers) who uses the alpine slopes must have this insurance, regardless of age.

You can be fined and have your ski pass confiscated if found to be without insurance.

Important Note: It Only Covers the Other Person!

Remember that the compulsory Third-Party Liability insurance only covers the damages or injuries you accidentally cause to other people or their property.

For your own peace of mind and financial protection, you should always ensure you have a separate, comprehensive Winter Sports Travel Insurance policy that covers:

  • Your own medical expenses (which can be very high).

  • Mountain rescue and repatriation costs (including helicopter rescue).

  • Loss or theft of equipment (skis, board, etc).

Check Your Existing Travel Insurance

The most convenient way is to check your existing travel or winter sports policy. Confirm you have “Personal Liability” or “Third-Party Liability” coverage, and that the policy explicitly covers winter sports activities (skiing/snowboarding).

Always carry proof of your insurance with you on the slopes (a digital PDF on your phone or a small printed card) in case the ski patrol requests it. The proof should ideally state the type of coverage and the policy number.

OR

Request to purchase insurance with your ski pass when booking your trip.

The price is typically from €3.00 to €5.00 per person, per day.

OR

Buy a standalone Italian ski policy

If you don’t have existing travel insurance or your current policy doesn’t cover winter sports liability, you can buy a dedicated policy online before or during your trip.

Reputable options often offered by resorts include:

ITASNOW – Site available in EN, DE, and IT

Snowcare – Website is only available in IT

Absolutely. The terrain in these locations works well for snowboarders.
Please note: it is recommended for snowboarders to have an advanced level in order to face slopes with a good speed comparable to intermediate skiers.

Like most resorts, there will always be some flatter sections that may require pushing or skating, but nothing unmanageable.

Your information pack includes detailed day-by-day route suggestions tailored to intermediate skiers, piste maps for each ski area, mountain hut recommendations, timing suggestions to ensure you complete each day comfortably, emergency contacts, and a few insider tips.

Yes! The routes in your information pack are suggestions designed to showcase the best of each ski area. Feel free to adapt them based on your interests, energy levels, ability, and conditions. The beauty of self-guided skiing is the flexibility to create your own adventure.

For severe weather or safety concerns, contact our 24-hour support line for updated advice. The support center has up-to-date weather and lift operation information.

The nearest major airports are Verona (approximately 2.5 hours), Milan (approximately 3.5 hours), and Innsbruck (approximately 2 hours). Alta Badia is also accessible by train to Bolzano or Brunico, followed by bus or taxi. Private transfers can be arranged as an optional extra.

What To Expect

Some journeys are best traveled at your own pace. The Dolomites Iconic 4: The Grand Ski Safari gives you the freedom to explore four magnificent ski areas – Alta Badia, Kronplatz, Marmolada, and Val Gardena – on your own terms, while we handle every logistical detail behind the scenes.

Imagine waking up in Alta Badia, stepping out onto sun-drenched slopes, and knowing the entire day is yours to design. Want to spend an extra hour perfecting your technique on a favorite run? Go ahead. Prefer a leisurely lunch at a gourmet rifugio with a second glass of Alto Adige wine? It’s your call. This safari combines the structure and security of a fully organized tour with the independence that makes every run feel like your own discovery.

Your journey takes you through 100’s of kilometers of interconnected ski terrain. You’ll start in Alta Badia, the gastronomic heart of the Dolomites, where Ladin culture and modern culinary creativity merge in mountain huts serving Michelin-level dishes. From there, you’ll explore Kronplatz’s expansive, panoramic slopes before tackling the crown jewel: Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, whose 12-kilometer glacier descent is among the most iconic ski runs in Europe.

The adventure continues in Val Gardena, home to the legendary Saslong World Cup downhill, before culminating in a section of the Sellaronda – the circular tour around the Sella Massif that connects four valleys, four passes, and centuries of Ladin mountain culture.

The Sellaronda follows ancient trade routes used for over a millennium by Ladin merchants moving between isolated valleys. Today’s ski circuit, with its modern lifts and groomed pistes, essentially recreates the journey these traders made on foot through mountain passes – transforming a survival necessity into one of skiing’s greatest pleasures.

Every evening, you arrive at one of your pre-booked 4-star hotels. Transfers between ski areas are arranged. Ski passes are sorted. Your detailed information pack includes route suggestions, piste maps, mountain hut recommendations, and 24-hour emergency contacts. All you need to do is wake up, step into your bindings, and explore.

This is ski safari at its finest: the thrill of self-discovery, supported by seamless planning and local expertise.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
