Tour Itinerary

Your self-guided Dolomites adventure begins when you arrive in Val Gardena and check into your base camp hotel at your convenience. There are three main locations for your accommodation, all villages, each offering its own unique atmosphere. Ortisei is the valley’s bustling main town with shops, cafes, and restaurants lining its pedestrian center – ideal if you enjoy having amenities at your fingertips. Santa Cristina offers a quieter village experience with intimate charm and mountain views in every direction. Selva sits at the valley’s upper end, delivering pure alpine character and immediate trail access for those who want to feel the mountains right away.

Use this day to settle in, explore your surroundings at leisure, and review your detailed route instructions and maps for the days ahead. Everything is clearly laid out so you’ll feel confident and prepared when you set out tomorrow morning.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

Today you ascend to Alpe di Siusi, and from your very first steps onto this vast plateau, you’ll understand why it’s considered one of Europe’s most remarkable alpine landscapes. Stretching across 56 square kilometers at 2,000 meters, this is the largest high-alpine pasture on the continent. For over a millennium, local families have brought their livestock here each summer, creating the pastoral paradise of wildflower meadows and scattered tree groves that you’ll walk through today.

Your route is straightforward and well-marked, allowing you to focus on the incredible scenery unfolding around you. The Sciliar massif dominates the southern skyline with its distinctive twin towers – the Santner and Euringer peaks that have become South Tyrol’s iconic symbol. To the east, the jagged Odle spires create a dramatic backdrop, while the Rosengarten massif rises to the south, famous for the pink alpenglow that illuminates its walls at sunset.

You’ll navigate across this ocean of meadows using your detailed map, following trails that wind gently through the landscape. There’s something deeply satisfying about finding your own way across such spectacular terrain. Your destination is a mountain hut positioned perfectly for evening views, where you’ll join other hikers for a communal dinner. As sunset approaches and the Rosengarten begins to glow in shades of rose and gold, you’ll have front-row seats to one of nature’s most beautiful performances.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑820m ↓370m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut with dormitory-style rooms

Wake when you’re ready and fuel up with breakfast before tackling one of the trek’s most rewarding segments. Your route begins with a 100-meter climb from the hut to Monte Pez, the 2,563-meter summit of the Sciliar massif. In the crisp morning air when visibility is at its peak, you’ll be rewarded with an unobstructed 360-degree panorama. The entire Alpe di Siusi spreads below like a green tapestry, while Dolomite giants ring the horizon in every direction. This is your moment – earned through your own navigation and effort.

Today’s trail leads you across the high plateau of the Sciliar massif, through a landscape that feels wonderfully remote and otherworldly. You’ll skirt the northern rim of the Antermoia group, a wild area that locals call the “Lost World,” rarely visited but visible from your path. Following your detailed route instructions, you’ll navigate the descent toward the Sassolungo group, where dramatic rock towers rise ahead of you.

Your evening destination is another excellently positioned mountain hut at the foot of the Sassolungo. From here, the chain of peaks surrounding Val di Fassa creates an impressive panorama. On clear days, you can spot the Marmolada, the Dolomites’ highest mountain, its famous vertical north face gleaming in the distance. As you relax after your day’s achievement, watch the setting sun transform the Sassolungo towers into glowing monuments against the darkening sky.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑500m ↓630m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut with dormitory-style rooms

Your final day on the hut-to-hut circuit takes you on a scenic loop around the Sassolungo group, one of the Dolomites’ most impressive massifs. This is a relatively gentle day in terms of elevation change, giving you the freedom to set your own comfortable pace and stop whenever something catches your eye. The trail winds through high meadows and across rocky sections, each turn revealing fresh perspectives on these ancient mountains.

Following well-marked trails (and occasional use of your map) that require no technical skills – just basic mountain hiking experience and confidence in your route-finding abilities. Looking back, you’ll see the Alpe di Siusi from a completely new angle, allowing you to appreciate just how far you’ve traveled over the past few days. Ahead, the massive Sella group creates an imposing backdrop, while the needle-like peaks of the Puez-Odle group rise dramatically to the north.

For those seeking an additional challenge, an optional higher route climbs to 2,700 meters, offering even more spectacular views of the Sella massif – the choice is entirely yours. Your destination is Passo Sella, one of the major mountain passes connecting Val Gardena to Val di Fassa. Once a formidable barrier for medieval traders, this pass now marks your successful completion of the hut-to-hut circuit. From here, you’ll take the public bus to your base camp hotel, where a hot shower and comfortable bed await.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑360m ↓490m | 5 hours
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

Your self-guided Val Gardena adventure concludes this morning. After breakfast, you’re free to depart at your leisure or stay to explore more of what this remarkable valley offers. For those continuing with our 6 or 7-day tour extensions, your independent adventure continues.

Want more time exploring Val Gardena’s mountain paradise on your own terms? Our extended tours add one or two spectacular day hikes from your comfortable base camp hotel, focusing on the magnificent Puez-Odle group. These base camp-style days give you ultimate flexibility – start when you want, hike at your preferred pace, and return to your hotel each evening.

You can choose from either or both days:
Extra day option 1: The hike traverses the renowned Seceda region, home to some of the most photographed mountain scenery in all the Dolomites. Here, the Odle spires rise like a natural cathedral, their distinctive needle-like peaks creating a skyline that draws photographers and hikers from across the globe.

Extra day option 2: This route explores the pristine Vallunga gorge, a wild valley that cuts deep into the Puez-Odle highlands, where you’ll experience untouched alpine wilderness far from any crowds.

Both routes match the challenge level of the main hut-to-hut trek, offering the same rewarding combination of physical engagement and stunning scenery. You’ll receive detailed route instructions and maps for each extension day, maintaining your independence while having the security of our pre-planned expertise. These extensions are perfect for self-reliant hikers who want to explore beyond the classic circuit while enjoying the comfort of returning to the same cozy hotel each evening.

The trails are well-marked and maintained, and you’ll receive detailed route instructions, an electronic trail map app for your smartphone, and a map. Our 24-hour support line provides peace of mind if you need assistance. However, you should be comfortable with independent navigation and decision-making in mountain environments.

The trails are non-technical mountain paths requiring no climbing skills or special equipment. They’re well-maintained and marked with standard alpine trail markers (red-white-red paint markers and wooden signposts). Some sections involve rocky terrain and steady elevation gain, but all trails are suitable for experienced hikers with good navigation skills. Proper hiking boots with ankle support are essential.

You have access to our 24-hour support hotline throughout your trek. If you encounter navigation difficulties, weather concerns, or any other issues, simply call, and we’ll provide immediate assistance. The trails are popular and well-used, so you’ll encounter other hikers. Mountain huts also have staff who can provide guidance if needed.

Within the framework of pre-booked accommodations, you have flexibility in your daily hiking schedule. You can start earlier or later, take longer breaks, or add optional detours where feasible. However, you do need to arrive at your booked mountain hut by 6 pm each day, and we recommend following the suggested timeline to ensure you have adequate daylight.

This is a Level 2 tour requiring good basic fitness. You should be comfortable hiking 5 hours per day with elevation gains up to 820 meters while carrying a daypack. Previous mountain hiking experience is important for self-guided tours, as you’ll be navigating independently. Regular walking or cardio exercise in the months before your tour is recommended.

Generally not, it will depend on your group size and availability during the season. All three are excellent starting points with good transportation connections. If you have a preference, please ask us when booking, and we will do our best to reserve it for you.

  • Ortisei is the valley’s main town with the most shops, restaurants, and services – convenient if you prefer easy access to amenities.
  • Santa Cristina offers a quieter, more intimate village atmosphere with beautiful mountain surroundings.
  • Selva sits highest in the valley with authentic alpine character and immediate trail access.

You’ll leave your main luggage at your base camp hotel before starting the hut-to-hut section. During the three-day hike, you carry what you need for the entire 3 days. After completing the hike, you return to your base camp hotel, where your luggage has been delivered, stored, and will be waiting for you.

Absolutely. Many self-guided hikers travel solo and find it a rewarding experience. In mountain huts, you’ll be accommodated in shared dormitories where you’ll naturally meet other hikers from around the world.

Mountain weather can change rapidly. You’re responsible for monitoring conditions and making decisions about whether to proceed, take alternative routes, or wait out poor weather. Our support line can provide weather advice. Some mountain huts have a poor weather protocol and may recommend waiting. Safety should always be your priority, and flexibility in your schedule is important.

The tour operates from mid-May through September. July and August offer the most stable weather and longest days, making navigation easier, though trails are busier. June and September typically have fewer hikers and can be excellent for those seeking more solitude, though the weather is less predictable and you need to be more flexible and prepared for variable conditions.

What To Expect

Imagine having the freedom to start your hiking day when you want, take as many photo breaks as you please, and linger over mountain views without watching the clock. This is self-guided hiking at its finest. Our Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi self-guided tour gives you the independence to explore one of the Dolomites’ most spectacular regions entirely on your own terms, while we handle all the complex planning and logistics behind the scenes.

You’ll follow expertly designed routes across Europe’s largest high-alpine meadow, where centuries-old trails wind through UNESCO World Heritage landscapes. We’ve done the hard work of planning the perfect itinerary, researching the best trails, and booking your accommodations in advance. You receive specialized 1:25,000 scale hiking maps, a GPS route plan (Outdoor Active Pro 1 month free use), and comprehensive daily route instructions developed by experienced guides who know every turn of these mountain paths. All you need to do is lace up your boots and start walking.

This five-day adventure takes you from Val Gardena’s charming villages across the vast Alpe di Siusi plateau, up to the summit of the legendary Sciliar massif, and around the imposing Sassolungo group. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked, perfect for confident hikers who relish the satisfaction of navigating their own route. Evenings in the huts bring hearty meals, laughter, and the simple pleasure of sharing a table with other mountain travelers. Your main luggage will be transported and stored ready for your arrival at the day 5 base camp hotel.

What sets this tour apart is the perfect balance of independence and support. You have complete freedom to hike at your own rhythm, yet we’re just a phone call away with 24-hour support if you need anything. Want to start early to catch the sunrise? Go for it. Prefer to sleep in and take a more leisurely pace? That’s your choice.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
