Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Val di Sole, the remote valley that serves as your gateway to the Adamello-Brenta wilderness. Nestled between the Ortler-Cevedale range and the Brenta Dolomites, this peaceful valley offers the perfect place to prepare for your adventure ahead.

After checking into your base camp hotel, use the afternoon to organize your gear, review your maps and route instructions, and explore the charming local towns. Fittingly named after a water goddess, Val di Sole boasts over 100 Alpine lakes and pristine mountain streams, and is also a region well known for its thermal spas.

Rest well tonight; tomorrow your alpine adventure begins!

Accommodation: 3-star hotel or B&B in Val di Sole

Your Northern Brenta self-guided tour begins with organized transportation to a lift that carries you to 2,050 meters, placing you directly into the heart of the Presanella range. From here, you’ll follow well-marked trails through pristine pine forests that regularly open onto high-altitude meadows with breathtaking views of the Brenta Dolomites across the valley.

The Presanella is famous for its abundance of alpine lakes, some tucked within dense forest, others positioned on open slopes with spectacular panoramas. Your route takes advantage of the morning hours when wildlife is most active – keep your eyes open for chamois on the rocky slopes above the treeline.

The clear trail markings and your detailed maps make navigation straightforward, allowing you to focus on the stunning surroundings. Your destination is Lake Nambino, surrounded by whispering pines and beloved by photographers for its serene beauty and perfect mountain reflections.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑620m ↓880m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Lake Nambino (1,770m)

Today’s route continues along Presanella’s slopes, climbing higher into alpine terrain where the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. The Five Lakes hiking route is celebrated as one of the finest walks in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, featuring enchanting scenery and extraordinarily rich flora.

Your self-guided itinerary has been designed to get you on the trail early, so you reach all the famed landmarks well before the day-trippers, arriving via lifts from Madonna di Campiglio. Walking through this perfectly preserved protected area, you’ll encounter crystal-clear lakes surrounded by blooming rhododendrons and vivid blue gentians, creating a natural high-altitude garden.

The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park hosts a significant population of chamois – in the quiet morning hours, you can often spot these agile, graceful animals bouncing from rock to rock in some of the most inaccessible places.

As you descend toward Madonna di Campiglio, a renowned alpine resort, offering the perfect setting for an afternoon rest, shopping, or simply enjoying Italian mountain town atmosphere (and aperitivo) before continuing deeper into the wilderness tomorrow.

Hiking: 14 km | ↑670m ↓920m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut in Madonna di Campiglio (1,460m)

Departing Madonna di Campiglio, your route leads straight into the heart of the Brenta Dolomites. The morning brings you to the Vallesinella waterfalls, one of the park’s most iconic and photographed natural attractions.

The trail winds upward through dense pine forests covering slopes below to 1,800 meters, then crosses the cascading stream multiple times. Wooden bridges provide access to the powerful waterfalls, where cool mist and thundering water create an invigorating sensory experience.

Above the waterfalls, the forest gradually thins as you climb toward the massive walls of central Brenta rising dramatically ahead. Tonight’s mountain hut sits at 2,200 meters with western exposure offering magnificent sunset views toward the Adamello group, where glaciers still crown the highest peaks, a perfect reward after today’s efforts.

Hiking: 11 km | ↑860m ↓200m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut (2,190m)

Today, you will understand why the Brenta Dolomites earned their legendary reputation. Your trail traverses rocky terrain along the base of Cima Grostè, the most visually striking peak in the Brenta range. Walking above 2,300 meters on distinctive Dolomite limestone, you’ll experience terrain that looks almost otherworldly – sharp pinnacles, deep gullies, and dramatic rock faces surrounding you.

The well-marked route to Passo Grostè takes just a few hours, giving you options: follow the direct path for a leisurely afternoon at the pass, or take the two-hour optional detour to Orti della Regina to see thousands of fossilized mollusks embedded in the rocks – locals from 230 million years ago when these mountains formed beneath a prehistoric ocean! The Brenta Dolomites display a distinctive reddish coloration, which is very rare among Dolomite peaks.

Tonight you’ll sleep at the foot of Pietra Grande, perhaps the most scenic red-colored formation in the entire range. Don’t miss sunset, the alpenglow on these walls creates one of nature’s most spectacular light shows, and Passo Grostè offers an unobstructed front-row seat.

Hiking: 8 km | ↑570m ↓310m | 4 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Passo Grostè (2,440m)

Today’s Lake Tovel independent trek descends through the expansive meadows of Val Flavona, a vast depression carved into the inner Brenta. Early in your descent, watch for the Turion tower, a remarkable 160-meter-high layered rock formation resembling an ancient fortress. This natural sculpture has become an iconic symbol of the Brenta Dolomites.

While today’s journey involves significant elevation loss, the gentle trail gradient and excellent path conditions make the walk pleasant, allowing you to maintain a comfortable, unhurried pace.

Lake Tovel itself represents the absolute highlight of many hikers’ entire alpine careers. The lake’s turquoise-blue waters create mirror-perfect reflections of the surrounding peaks, and the naturalistic setting feels almost untouched by human presence. This is the famous “Red Lake” that once turned crimson each July due to rare algae blooms – a phenomenon that mysteriously ended in 1964 but left behind countless legends, including the romantic tale of Queen Tresenga.

Take your time here; Lake Tovel rewards those who linger with its ever-changing light and peaceful atmosphere.

Hiking: 15 km | ↑70m ↓1,310m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Lake Tovel (1,170m)

We recommend beginning your day with an early walk to Lake Tovel’s northern tip, where morning light creates magical effects – mountain peaks illuminated by sunrise while the lake surface remains in shadow, producing extraordinary photographic opportunities.

You will venture into the northern Brenta, the least visited and most diverse area of the entire mountain range. This region combines red dolomite mountains, emerald-green pastures, and ancient pine forests in landscapes that see remarkably few other hikers. Your destination is Monte Peller in the extreme north of the Brenta group, and the journey there offers wonderful solitude for independent trekkers seeking authentic wilderness experiences.

Approximately an hour before reaching the hut, your route passes a traditional alpine farm famous for producing exceptional cheese and dairy products using centuries-old mountain techniques. An ideal rest stop to sample local specialties – don’t miss tasting the Casolet cheese!

As you complete the final approach to the hut, listen out for marmots in the surrounding meadows; their distinctive whistling calls often echo across these slopes – see if you can spot them!

Hiking: 13 km | ↑1,190m ↓390m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut near Monte Peller (2,090m)

Your route notes will present two options for this final hiking day. The more ambitious choice involves an early morning ascent of Monte Peller itself – a demanding and exposed but secured trail leading to an isolated peak standing in complete solitude. The summit rewards your efforts with a spectacular 360-degree panorama encompassing the northern and central Brenta plus the adjacent Ortler-Cevedale group.

For those preferring a gentler morning, Lake Salare lies just two hours from the hut. This scenic and peaceful lake nestles in green meadows dotted with rare fir trees, and its calm beauty has made it a beloved subject for landscape artists. The lake provides a tranquil conclusion to your wilderness journey.

Whichever option you choose, the afternoon brings a descent through mixed forests back to civilization, followed by pre-arranged transportation returning you to your base camp hotel in Val di Sole.

Tonight, celebrate your accomplishment and reflect on an extraordinary self-guided adventure through one of Europe’s most pristine protected areas.

Hiking: 15 km | ↑520m ↓640m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: 3-star hotel or B&B in Val di Sole

After breakfast at your hotel, your self-guided Adamello-Brenta adventure concludes. The experiences you’ve gathered – pristine lakes, dramatic peaks, authentic mountain refuges, and the profound satisfaction of independent navigation through wilderness – will remain with you forever.

You’ve walked through an area featuring extraordinary geological and ecological diversity, one of the best-preserved alpine ecosystems in Europe. The freedom of self-guided travel combined with expert planning has allowed you to create your own unique story in these magnificent mountains.

This trekking itinerary is also available in 6-day, 7-day, and 8-day versions for those with limited time or who prefer a shorter adventure. Each option maintains the quality and highlights of the full trek while matching your preferred trip length.

You should be comfortable reading hiking maps and following trail markers. Basic navigation skills are helpful but not essential, as trails are well-marked and you’ll have detailed maps plus GPS navigation on your phone. Previous multi-day hiking experience is beneficial.

We provide electronic maps using the Outdooractive Pro app (you will have complimentary access for the duration of your hike), which is compatible with both Android and Apple smartphones. These show your real-time position on the trail, the route ahead, and key waypoints. They work offline, so no cellular signal is required in the mountains.

You will have access to 24-hour on-call support. You can contact support anytime for assistance, route advice, or emergency support. Most areas have cellular coverage, and mountain huts have communication systems.

Yes! One of the advantages of self-guided hiking is flexibility. You can start earlier or later, take longer breaks, and explore side trails at your own pace. However, you should always plan to arrive at your hut by 6 pm, and you must inform them if you will arrive later than expected.

The trails in Adamello-Brenta Nature Park are well-maintained and clearly marked with standard alpine trail signs and paint blazes. Combined with your detailed maps and GPS navigation, route-finding is straightforward for hikers with basic outdoor experience.

You’ll stay in shared dormitories with breakfast and dinner included. Most huts offer private room options for an additional fee. Hot showers are available at all huts for a small charge (€3-5).

We handle all hut reservations in advance. Your accommodation is confirmed and paid for, so you simply need to arrive and check in. The huts are expecting you based on our booking.

Absolutely! We offer 6-day, 7-day, and 8-day versions for those with less time or who prefer a shorter trek. Contact us to discuss which option best matches your schedule and preferences.

Mountain weather is unpredictable and changes quickly.

  • Rainstorms: Wear waterproof clothing. Be careful of slippery rocks/grass. Consider shortcuts. If caught, wait it out in a protected place.

  • Thunderstorms: Find shelter (hut/shelter) in advance. Do not walk on exposed terrain. Stay away from isolated trees. ABSOLUTELY AVOID via ferratas and secured trails.

The northern Brenta sections (Days 6-8) see relatively few hikers, offering excellent solitude. Areas near Madonna di Campiglio and Passo Grostè are definitely much busier, especially in August. Overall, this trek provides far more solitude than the famous routes in other Dolomite areas.

Mountain huts can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Please inform us of any allergies or dietary restrictions when booking, and we’ll coordinate with the huts.

What To Expect

The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park offers one of the most rewarding self-guided hiking experiences in the Italian Alps. Established in 1967 as one of the region’s largest protected areas, this wilderness sanctuary prioritizes environmental preservation and responsible tourism, creating an authentic alpine environment where independent hikers can discover exceptional solitude on well-maintained trails. This Adamello-Brenta self-guided hiking adventure gives you the freedom to experience this remarkable landscape at your own pace, with comprehensive support ensuring confidence and safety throughout your journey.

What makes this Lake Tovel independent trek truly special is the extraordinary geological diversity you’ll traverse. The route begins in the Presanella group, mountains born from alpine forces 50 million years ago, characterized by glacier-fed lakes and lush coniferous forests. You’ll then cross into the Brenta Dolomites, ancient coral reefs uplifted from a prehistoric ocean 230 million years ago, now standing as dramatic red-tinged limestone peaks. This combination creates unparalleled variety – within a single day, you might walk past sparkling alpine lakes, traverse lunar-like rocky terrain, wander through virgin pine forests, cross vibrant wildflower meadows, summit high passes, and stand beside cascading waterfalls.

Lake Tovel serves as the centerpiece of your adventure. This naturalistic gem, once famous worldwide as the “Red Lake” for waters that turned crimson each summer until 1964, remains one of the most photographed locations in the Italian Alps. The lake’s remarkable beauty comes from its crystal-clear turquoise waters perfectly reflecting the surrounding mountain peaks, a photographer’s paradise, and a moment of serene contemplation on your journey. Beyond Tovel, the Val di Sole hut-to-hut hiking route continues into the northern Brenta, an area so remote and pristine that encountering other trekkers becomes increasingly rare as you venture deeper into this wilderness.

Your independence is supported by meticulous planning and comprehensive resources. We provide specialized 1:25,000 hiking maps and electronic GPS navigation for your smartphone, ensuring you always know your position and route. The itinerary has been carefully designed by experienced mountain guides who know every trail, water source, and viewpoint. All mountain hut accommodations are pre-arranged, with breakfasts and dinners included, eliminating the stress of finding lodging or meals. Transportation to the trailhead and back to your base camp is organized, and our 24-hour on-call support means help is always available if needed. This is independent hiking done right – the freedom to move at your own pace, rest when you choose, and immerse yourself fully in nature, combined with the security of professional support and expert local knowledge backing every step of your adventure.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
