Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Val di Fassa, your gateway to one of the Dolomites’ most spectacular trekking circuits. After arriving at your hotel in the valley (located in Vigo, Pozza, or Pera), you’ll check in and collect your comprehensive trek materials, including a specialized 1:25,000 hiking map and your detailed daily schedule.

Take the afternoon to settle in, explore your charming mountain village, and prepare for the adventure ahead!

Your trek begins with a morning transfer from the hotel to Passo San Pellegrino at 1,920 meters, where the adventure truly starts. From this impressive mountain pass, you’ll ascend into the Monzoni Group, the first of six magnificent ranges you’ll encounter.

The trail skirts the southern slopes of the Monzoni, an area that sees remarkably few hikers, creating a wilderness atmosphere where alpine ibex roam freely. These magnificent creatures, with their distinctive curved horns, are surprisingly comfortable around hikers and often even pause long enough for photographs!

As you descend toward your overnight refuge in the Contrin valley, an unforgettable panorama unfolds before your eyes. The Sassolungo Group, your destination in two days, reveals itself in all its glory across the valley, its distinctive profile etched against the sky. This remarkable first day sets the stage for the adventures ahead.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑790m ↓680m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut in Contrin valley

Today brings one of the trek’s longest days, crossing several mountain passes before reaching Lake Fedaia at the foot of the Queen of the Dolomites. You’ll bypass the untrekkable sections of the Marmolada Group by traversing ridges east of the Monzoni, each pass revealing new perspectives on these ancient mountains.

Your route descends into the Ciampac, a natural amphitheater of exceptional beauty where grassy hollows spread beneath towering peaks. From here, alpine meadows burst with wildflowers in summer, creating a spectacular foreground for your first clear views across to the Sella Group. The contrast between these gentle meadows and the stark limestone walls above captures the essence of the Dolomites.

The landscape transforms dramatically in the afternoon as you embark on a lengthy but scenic ascent to Fedaia Pass. This ancient pilgrimage route to the Fassa Valley winds mostly through forest along the slopes of a wide gorge. The Marmolada’s north face looms above, its glacier – the largest remaining in the Dolomites – feeding countless mountain streams that cascade down the gorge walls. The sound of rushing water accompanies your climb, and the cool air flowing from the glacier provides welcome refreshment on warm days.

Hiking: 18 km | ↑1190m ↓1180m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Lake Fedaia

Today’s trek takes you into one of the most geologically fascinating areas of the Dolomites, the Sella Group, a petrified coral atoll that formed in a prehistoric ocean millions of years ago. The famous panoramic trail known as the Road of Merchants once served traders traveling between the Fassa and Livinallongo valleys, and you’ll follow in their ancient footsteps.

The trail runs along exposed slopes and ridges, offering commanding views back to the Marmolada glacier and down to the azure waters of Lake Fedaia far below. The sense of space and altitude is exhilarating as you traverse these high paths with sheer drops and expansive vistas in every direction.

As you approach the Sella Group proper, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Kilometer-high outer cliffs rise vertically from the valleys below, their walls broken only by narrow gorges that provide the few routes to the summit plateau. This otherworldly terrain, with its fractured rock formations and complete absence of vegetation, creates an impression of being on another planet. The lunar-like quality of this landscape is unlike anything else in the Alps.

Hiking: 12 km | ↑1250m ↓740m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut on the Sella Group

Wake before dawn if conditions permit – your hut’s location on the Sella plateau offers one of the finest sunrise viewpoints in the Dolomites.

Today’s route is challenging but immensely rewarding, ending in your ascent of Piz Boè at 3,152 meters – the highest point of the Sella Group. The trail winds through more of the Sella’s extraordinary lunar landscape, crossing a lifeless plateau. The barren terrain and stark rock formations create scenes that mirror images from distant planets, making this one of the most photographed sections of the entire trek.

From Piz Boè’s summit, the view is nothing short of spectacular. On clear days, you can identify dozens of famous Dolomite peaks stretching to every horizon. Your descent follows a dramatically beautiful narrow gorge with thousand-meter vertical walls rising on both sides. This natural corridor through the Sella massif provides a thrilling finale to your time on the plateau.

By day’s end, you’ll reach the base of the Sassolungo Group, positioning yourself perfectly for another legendary Dolomite sunset from your evening’s rifugio.

Hiking: 12 km | ↑900m ↓1220m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at the foot of Sassolungo

After two demanding days, today offers a more relaxed pace as you skirt the Sassolungo range. Its German name, Langkofel, translates as Long Rock – an apt description for this compact mountain group that stands distinctly apart from neighboring massifs, rising dramatically above the surrounding alpine meadows.

Your guide can offer two route options depending on your group’s energy and the day’s weather. Trekking around the entire Sassolungo massif, providing views of all the surrounding mountain chains, the scenic Gardena Valley, and the expansive Alpe di Siusi plateau (Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow).

Alternatively, you can take a more direct route that covers only the southern portion before crossing through the massif via its sole traversing trail. This path climbs to nearly 2,700 meters, threading through a narrow gorge that bisects the mountain group. Both routes offer exceptional mountain scenery, and your guide will help determine which best suits the day’s conditions and your group’s preferences.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑870m ↓780m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut near the Sassolungo

The Antermoia Group awaits – a vast high-altitude wilderness characterized by chaotically scattered peaks separated by just a few passable gorges. This remote massif sees far fewer visitors, offering a genuine escape into pristine mountain solitude. The absence of roads and lifts creates an atmosphere of true wilderness, with the scattered mountain huts serving as your only connection to civilization.

Your trail ascends through the bottom of a glacier-polished eastern gorge, where the action of ancient ice has sculpted the rock into smooth, flowing forms. The destination that makes this climb worthwhile is Lake Antermoia, at 2,495 meters and cradled in one of the most spectacular natural amphitheaters in the Dolomites.

The lake’s still turquoise waters reflect the surrounding peaks, while yellowish limestone cliffs tower 400 meters above the shoreline. Many hikers consider this one of the trek’s most memorable locations, and your mountain hut sits perfectly positioned to enjoy the view. If you arrive with enough daylight remaining, explore the shoreline and watch how the evening alpenglow transforms the cliffs into a palette of rose and gold.

Hiking: 16 km | ↑930m ↓1290m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Lake Antermoia

Your final full day of trekking leads from Antermoia’s wild gorges to the Rosengarten range – named for its rosy glow at sunset when the peaks seem to catch fire. This petrified coral reef stretches 10 kilometers southward, remarkably preserving its original reef structure over 230 million years.

The day’s highlight comes when the Torri di Vajolet (the Vajolet Towers) come into view. This formation of rock pinnacles resembles the towers of a fairytale castle, their multiple spires rising dramatically from the mountainside. These towers have become one of the Dolomites’ most iconic landmarks, photographed countless times yet never losing their power to astound.

The final highlight comes as you traverse the panoramic Shepherds’ Trail, a path running along a ridge that reveals sweeping views of the Rosengarten’s summits. Below, slopes cascade down to the valley, while ahead, the trail brings you steadily closer to your journey’s end. By afternoon, you’ll complete the circuit, returning to your familiar base camp hotel in Val di Fassa with a week’s worth of extraordinary memories and experiences.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑810m ↓780m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Hotel in Val di Fassa

Your Val di Fassa mountain hut tour concludes this morning. After breakfast, you’re free to depart at your leisure.

Most trekkers find themselves reflecting on the incredible diversity of landscapes encountered, from the Sella Group’s alien lunar terrain to the thundering cascades below Marmolada’s glacier, from the wildlife-rich slopes of the Monzoni to the fairy-tale towers of the Rosengarten. The comfortable mountain huts in their spectacular locations, the camaraderie of the trail, and the expert guidance that brought these mountains to life all combine to create memories that last long after you’ve returned home.

Make this adventure your own! This 9-day trek can be shortened to 6 days or extended to 10 to perfectly suit your holiday plans.

View Tour

This Fassa Valley guided trek requires a good level of fitness rated at 3/5. You should be comfortable hiking 5-7 hours daily with elevation gains up to 1,250 meters. While no technical mountaineering skills are needed, you’ll be walking at high altitudes (2,000-3,000+ meters) on mountain trails that can be steep and rocky. Hiking experience and reasonable cardiovascular fitness are essential.

The rifugios around Val di Fassa are considered among the finest in the Alps. Most huts offer hot showers (small fee), comfortable dormitory accommodation, and excellent traditional meals. Many feature spectacular locations with panoramic terraces. Private rooms (2-4 beds) are available in most huts for a €30 per person per night supplement, subject to availability and booking.

The Val di Fassa hiking tour operates from mid-May through the end of September. July and August offer the most reliable weather, but busier trails and huts. June and September provide quieter trails with potentially lingering snow (June) or earlier autumn conditions (September). The best balance of weather and crowds is typically late June or early September.

The nearest major airports are Verona, Venice, Innsbruck, and Bolzano. From these airports, you can reach Val di Fassa by a combination of train and bus (approximately 3-5 hours depending on origin). We can provide detailed routing information once you’ve booked. Private airport transfers are available as an optional extra for added convenience.

Yes, solo travelers are welcome on our Val di Fassa mountain hut tour. The small group format and mountain hut stays create excellent opportunities to connect with fellow trekkers. Accommodation in mountain huts is in shared dormitories, which works well for solo travelers. For the hotel nights in Val di Fassa, solo travelers can choose shared accommodation or pay the single supplement.

Your experienced mountain guide constantly monitors weather conditions and will adjust the itinerary as needed for safety. This might include modifying the day’s route, utilizing mountain lifts to bypass exposed sections, or, in rare cases, waiting out severe weather at a hut. The circular nature of this trek around Val di Fassa provides flexibility for route adaptations while still completing the essential highlights.

Most trails are well-marked mountain paths suitable for fit hikers without technical climbing skills. Some sections include rocky terrain, steep ascents, and brief exposed passages with safety cables or chains for support. The Sella Group sections reach high altitudes with dramatic scenery but remain on established trails. Your guide will assess your group’s comfort level and provide instruction for any challenging sections.

The trek reaches a maximum elevation of 3,152 meters at Piz Boè summit, with most hiking between 2,000-2,600 meters. While this is considered moderate altitude, some trekkers may experience mild symptoms like breathlessness or headaches. The gradual ascent over several days helps with acclimatization. Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a steady pace are important. Your guide monitors the group for any altitude-related concerns.

Breakfast and dinner are included at all mountain huts and hotels. Mountain hut meals are hearty, traditional Alpine cuisine perfect for fueling long hiking days. Breakfasts typically include bread, cheese, cold cuts, jam, and hot beverages. Dinners feature multi-course meals with soup, pasta, main course, and dessert. Lunches are not included, but most rifugios offer packed lunches or midday snacks for purchase.

Yes, most mountain huts can accommodate vegetarian diets and common dietary restrictions if notified in advance. Please inform us of any dietary requirements, allergies, or preferences when booking. While huts make every effort to accommodate special diets, options may be more limited than in valley restaurants. Bringing supplementary snacks for very specific dietary needs is advisable.

What To Expect

The Val di Fassa Circuit stands as one of the Dolomites’ most rewarding alpine journeys, circling through six magnificent mountain ranges that have shaped the identity of this legendary region. This expert-guided trek takes you on an unforgettable week-long adventure around Val di Fassa, traversing the Monzoni, Marmolada, Sella, Sassolungo, Antermoia, and Rosengarten ranges in a spectacular loop that begins and ends at your comfortable base camp hotel.

Walking mainly between 2,000 and 2,600 meters in elevation, you’ll experience the full spectrum of Dolomite landscapes. From warm alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers to the stark, moon-like terrain of the Sella plateau, where trails climb above 3,000 meters, each day reveals new wonders. You’ll traverse panoramic ridges with views stretching across jagged peaks, venture into the remote wilderness of the Antermoia massif where few trails penetrate, and stand in awe beneath the iconic Vajolet Towers that have captivated mountaineers for generations.

Your nights are spent in carefully selected mountain huts that represent the finest accommodations in the Alps. These rifugios offer hot showers, hearty traditional meals, and locations so spectacular you’ll struggle to leave their terraces. Many offer private rooms, allowing you to enjoy the authentic mountain hut experience without sacrificing comfort. Your local English-speaking guide brings these mountains to life with their intimate knowledge of the region, ensuring your safety while revealing hidden corners and sharing the stories woven into these ancient peaks.

This Val di Fassa hiking tour is ideal for active travelers who want to immerse themselves in the Dolomites without the stress of navigation or logistics. While good physical fitness is essential for the sustained hiking and elevation changes, no technical mountaineering skills are required. Each day’s trek is thoughtfully paced with opportunities to rest at scenic rifugios, and your guide adapts the route to suit the group’s abilities and weather conditions. From your first transfer to Passo San Pellegrino through your triumphant return to Val di Fassa, every detail is handled so you can focus on the extraordinary beauty surrounding you.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
