Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Tour Itinerary
Arrive at your basecamp hotel in Val di Fassa, where you will collect your trek materials, including your detailed itinerary, GPS instructions, specialized hiking maps, and route instructions. Take time to review your navigation kit and familiarize yourself with the route. Explore the village, prepare your gear, and rest up for tomorrow’s adventure into the mountains.

Your trek begins with a transfer to Passo San Pellegrino at 1,920 meters. Following your detailed route instructions, you’ll ascend into the Monzoni Group along southern slopes that see relatively few hikers. This quieter trail offers excellent opportunities to spot alpine ibex, remarkably tolerant and tame creatures that often pause for photographs. Take your time here; one advantage of self-guided hiking is setting your own pace for wildlife watching.
As you descend toward the Contrin valley, the stunning Sassolungo Group emerges across the valley, offering a spectacular preview of peaks you’ll reach in two days. Your route notes guide you safely to tonight’s mountain hut.
Hiking: 10 km | ↑790m ↓680m | 5 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut in Contrin valley

Today’s route crosses several mountain passes, bypassing the technical sections of Marmolada by traversing ridges east of Monzoni. You’ll descend into Ciampac, a stunning grassy hollow that forms a natural amphitheater. This serene basin makes an ideal spot for a leisurely break, enjoy your packed lunch surrounded by wildflower meadows with the imposing Sella Group rising across the valley.
The afternoon brings a long but manageable ascent toward Fedaia Pass along an ancient pilgrims’ route. The trail winds through a broad gorge at the foot of mighty Marmolada, where countless streams cascade down, fed by the Dolomites’ largest glacier. Your navigation tools guide you to Fedaia Lake and tonight’s rifugio.
Hiking: 18 km | ↑1,190m ↓1,180m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Fedaia Lake

Following the historic Road of Merchants, your route climbs toward the Sella Group, a petrified coral atoll from a prehistoric ocean. This panoramic trail runs along exposed ridges, offering continuously stunning views of the Marmolada glacier behind you and Fedaia Lake far below. The Sella presents itself as an imposing fortress with kilometer-high cliffs and narrow gorges.
Upon reaching the plateau, you’ll enter an otherworldly landscape that genuinely resembles another planet. At nearly 3,000 meters, this heavily eroded terrain stretches in rugged, barren splendor, with sharp rock formations and ancient weathered stone dominating in every direction.
Tonight’s mountain hut, spectacularly positioned on Sella itself, offers extraordinary sunset views across dozens of surrounding peaks.
Hiking: 12 km | ↑1,250m ↓740m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut on the Sella plateau

Rise early for sunrise from your spectacular location, and the first light touching the surrounding peaks creates an unforgettable display.
Today you’ll summit Piz Boè at 3,152 meters, the highest point of the Sella Group and your entire trek. The route takes you deeper into Sella’s surreal lunar landscape, crossing the lifeless plateau where elevations range from 2,500 to 2,900 meters. The summit rewards your challenging ascent with 360-degree panoramas stretching to distant horizons.
After savoring this achievement, your descent follows a dramatically different route through a stunning narrow gorge with thousand-meter walls rising on either side. This natural corridor creates an almost cathedral-like atmosphere before opening up at the foot of the Sassolungo Group, where tonight’s welcoming rifugio awaits.
Hiking: 12 km | ↑900m ↓1,220m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at the foot of Sassolungo

After two demanding days, today offers a more relaxed pace as you circle the Sassolungo range. This compact massif rises dramatically above surrounding alpine meadows, its distinctive profile towering in isolation.
You have two route options: circumnavigate the entire massif for comprehensive views of the surrounding ranges, the Gardena Valley, and the Alpe di Siusi plateau, or take the more direct southern route crossing through the range via its only trail, ascending to nearly 2,700 meters through a spectacular gorge. Both routes deliver impressive scenery, and the flexibility to choose based on your energy level demonstrates the freedom of self-guided trekking.
Hiking: 10 km | ↑870m ↓780m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut near Sassolungo

Today, you will venture into the Antermoia Group, a vast high-altitude wilderness with minimal vegetation and chaotically scattered peaks separated by just a few passable gorges. This relatively little-traveled area offers genuine mountain solitude, far from any roads or cable cars.
The route ascends through an eastern gorge polished smooth by ancient glaciers, leading to Lake Antermoia at 2,495 meters. The scene here is breathtaking: still, cold waters surrounded by yellowish cliffs soaring 400 meters straight up, creating a stunning contrast between golden rock and deep blue water. This location arguably stands as the most visually spectacular spot on the entire circuit. Take time to savor it, perhaps enjoying lunch by the lake’s shore in this hidden mountain sanctuary.
Hiking: 16 km | ↑930m ↓1,290m | 7 hrs
Accommodation: Mountain hut at Lake Antermoia

Your final full day brings you from Antermoia’s wild gorges to the Rosengarten range, completing your circuit of six massifs. This mountain range is essentially a petrified coral reef stretching ten kilometers, remarkably preserved for 230 million years.
The highlight awaits at Torri di Vajolet, massive rock pinnacles resembling a fairytale castle’s towers. The trail passes beneath them before climbing to the opposite slope, where an even more spectacular viewpoint reveals their full majesty silhouetted against the sky. Another magnificent section is the Shepherds’ Trail, running along a ridge with panoramic views of Rosengarten peaks above and vast talus slopes descending into valleys below.
The day concludes with your descent back to your familiar basecamp hotel in Val di Fassa, completing the circle.
Hiking: 10 km | ↑810m ↓780m | 6 hrs
Accommodation: Hotel in Val di Fassa

Your self-guided Dolomites adventure concludes. Depart from Val di Fassa carrying the satisfaction of having navigated one of the Alps’ great treks, with memories of spectacular landscapes, wildlife encounters, and the freedom of hiking at your own pace through some of Europe’s most stunning mountains.

View TourPrevious multi-day hiking experience is important, but you don’t need prior self-guided trekking experience. You should be confident in reading topographic maps and following trail markings. The Dolomites have excellent signage with numbered paths and regular waypoint markers. If this is your first self-guided trek, the well-marked trails and our comprehensive materials make this an excellent introduction to independent mountain hiking.
This trek is rated 3/5 for fitness. You should be comfortable hiking 5-7 hours per day carrying a pack, with daily elevation gains between 800 – 1,250 meters. You can set your own pace, but as a general rule, you must reach each hut by 6 pm. Regular cardiovascular exercise and recent full-day hikes are essential preparation.
You have 24-hour on-call support throughout your trek. If you encounter difficulties, feel unwell, or have concerns, simply call the emergency number provided. The Dolomites have good mobile coverage in most areas, and most mountain huts have phones.
The itinerary has pre-booked accommodations at specific huts each night, so modifications are limited. However, you have options for alternative paths or can shorten stages using cable cars where available. If you need a rest day or must cut the trek short, we’ll help arrange alternatives. Changes may incur additional costs and are subject to availability.
Mountain huts are comfortable and well-maintained, with shared dormitory rooms (bunk beds). Private 2-4 bed rooms can sometimes be reserved for a supplement. All huts provide bedding, hot showers (€3-5 per use), charging facilities, and drying rooms. They serve hearty traditional meals, and most have spectacular locations. Staff generally speak English.
Mobile coverage is generally good but varies by location and can be unreliable in deep valleys or some high ridges. Most huts have a signal, and many offer WiFi (sometimes for a fee). Download offline maps as backup and carry a portable charger. Inform someone at home of your daily itinerary and expected arrival times.
Breakfast and dinner at mountain huts, plus breakfast at the basecamp hotel. Hut breakfasts include bread, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, and hot beverages. Dinners are multi-course meals with soup, pasta or risotto, main course, and dessert. Lunches aren’t included, but huts offer packed lunches or meals to purchase (€10-15). Vegetarian options available with advance notice.
Huts can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals, though options may be limited. Inform us of any dietary needs, allergies, or intolerances at booking so we can notify all huts in advance. Huts prepare meals based on bookings with limited storage, so last-minute requests can’t always be fulfilled. For highly specific requirements, consider supplementing with your own provisions.
We strongly recommend comprehensive insurance covering mountain hiking up to 3,200 meters, medical expenses, emergency mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, and belongings. Mountain rescue can be extremely costly. Ensure your policy specifically covers trekking and alpine activities at altitude – many standard policies don’t. Since you’re hiking independently, insurance provides crucial protection if you need assistance or must cut the trek short.
Estimated times are based on average pace with moderate breaks. You control your speed, but huts serve dinner at set times (typically 7:00-7:30 PM), and they expect you to arrive by 6 pm. If moving slower than expected, you must contact the hut to notify them that you are on your way and your expected arrival time.
You have excellent chances of spotting alpine ibex, particularly in the Monzoni Group, where they’re remarkably tolerant of hikers. Chamois frequent rocky slopes, while marmots are common and easily heard by their warning whistles. Birds include golden eagles, alpine choughs, and various alpine species. Deer inhabit valleys but are less common at higher elevations. Observe all wildlife from a respectful distance without feeding or approaching closely.
Nearest major airports are Venice Marco Polo (3 hours), Verona (2.5 hours), and Innsbruck (2.5 hours). From these, reach Val di Fassa by train to Bolzano or Trento, then by bus or rental car. We can arrange private transfers for an additional fee. By public transport: train to Bolzano or Trento, then regional bus to Vigo, Pozza, or Pera. We provide detailed transportation information once you’re booked.
Your main luggage stays safely stored at your basecamp hotel throughout the seven nights in mountain huts, at no charge. You’ll return to the same hotel on the final night. Pack what you need for mountain huts in your hiking backpack, leaving everything else at the hotel for when you return to the valley.
No strict age limit, but participants must be physically capable of the demanding hiking described. Most self-guided hikers are 25-65 years old. Minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Self-guided trekking requires confidence in independent decision-making, map reading, and physical endurance. The key factors are fitness level, experience, and self-reliance rather than age alone.
At several points, trails descend to road passes where you can arrange transport back to Val di Fassa if necessary due to injury, illness, or personal circumstances. Contact our 24-hour support line, and we’ll assist with transportation and accommodation changes.
Absolutely! Val di Fassa offers excellent day hikes, via ferrata routes, cycling, and access to landmarks like Lago di Carezza. We’re happy to arrange additional accommodation and suggest activities. Some guests arrive early to acclimatize and explore, while others extend afterward to rest and enjoy the region’s culture and cuisine at a relaxed pace.
What To Expect
Experience the Val di Fassa Circuit on your own terms with the perfect balance of independence and support. This self-guided trek circles the stunning valley through six magnificent Dolomite ranges: Monzoni, Marmolada, Sella, Sassolungo, Antermoia, and Rosengarten. You’ll navigate using detailed itineraries developed by expert mountain guides, specialized 1:25,000 hiking maps, and comprehensive route instructions, giving you the confidence to explore while maintaining the freedom to hike at your own pace.
The route primarily traverses elevations between 2,000 and 2,600 meters, climbing above 3,000 meters on the spectacular Sella plateau. You’ll experience the full diversity of mountain landscapes, from flower-filled alpine meadows and wildlife-rich wilderness to the otherworldly lunar terrain of Sella and the dramatic rock formations of Rosengarten. With all logistics handled and accommodations pre-booked, you can focus entirely on the journey itself, stopping whenever beauty demands it and setting your own rhythm through these extraordinary mountains.
The mountain huts along this route are renowned as among the finest in the Alps, offering comfortable dormitory accommodation, hearty traditional meals, and hot showers. You’ll have 24-hour on-call support throughout your trek, providing peace of mind while you enjoy the satisfaction of navigating your own adventure. This combination of expert planning, quality infrastructure, and personal freedom creates an ideal introduction to multi-day alpine trekking or a rewarding challenge for experienced independent hikers.

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.
Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.
We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.
Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
