Tour Itinerary

Your Dolomites adventure begins when you arrive in Val Gardena and check into your base camp hotel. There are three possible starting points, depending on availability, each with its own character. Ortisei is the valley’s main hub, a lively town with shops, restaurants, and a vibrant town center where you can soak up the local atmosphere. Santa Cristina sits quietly between its neighbors, offering an intimate village feel with stunning mountain views. Selva, positioned at the valley’s head, delivers pure alpine ambiance and immediate access to mountain trails.

Take this day to relax, explore your surroundings, and meet your guide for a tour briefing. The mountains are calling, and tomorrow you’ll answer.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

The real adventure begins as you ascend to Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high-alpine pasture stretching across 56 square kilometers of rolling meadows at 2,000 meters elevation. This isn’t just big, it’s breathtaking. For over a thousand years, local farmers have brought their cattle here each summer to graze, maintaining traditions that shaped this remarkable landscape.

As you hike across this vast plateau, the Sciliar massif dominates the southern horizon. Its distinctive profile, crowned by the Santner and Euringer towers, has become South Tyrol’s most recognizable symbol. The trail is gentle but engaging, allowing you to drink in panoramic views that shift with every step. To the east, the Odle spires create a jagged skyline. To the south, the Rosengarten massif glows pink in the afternoon light.

Your destination is a mountain hut perched perfectly for sunset viewing. As evening falls and alpenglow sets the Rosengarten ablaze in shades of rose and gold, you’ll understand why this phenomenon has inspired legends for centuries. Dinner is served communal-style, where hikers from around the world share stories over hearty South Tyrolean cuisine.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑820m ↓370m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut with dormitory-style rooms

Wake early for one of the tour’s most rewarding moments. A short but invigorating 100-meter climb from the hut brings you to Monte Pez, the highest point of the Sciliar massif at 2,563 meters. In the crisp morning air, when visibility is at its peak, you’ll enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree panorama. The entire Alpe di Siusi spreads below you like a green carpet, while Dolomite giants surround you in every direction. This is the view that graces a thousand postcards, but experiencing it in person, with the wind on your face and achievement in your heart, is entirely different.

Today’s trail leads you across the high plateau of the Sciliar massif, a landscape that feels otherworldly in its stark beauty. You’ll skirt the northern edge of the Antermoia group, a remote and rarely visited area that locals call the “Lost World.” The contrast is striking as you descend toward the Sassolungo group, where the trail brings you to another excellently positioned mountain hut at the foot of these dramatic rock towers.

From your evening vantage point, the chain of peaks surrounding Val di Fassa unfolds before you. If conditions are clear, you’ll spot the Marmolada, the Dolomites’ highest peak, its famous vertical north face gleaming white even in summer. As sunset approaches, watch how the light transforms the Sassolungo towers into silent watchmen against the darkening sky.

Hiking: 13 km | ↑500m ↓630m | 5 hours
Accommodation: Mountain hut with dormitory-style rooms

Your final day on the trail takes you on a scenic circuit around the Sassolungo group, one of the Dolomites’ most imposing massifs. This is a relatively gentle day in terms of elevation change, allowing you to focus on the constantly evolving scenery. The trail winds through high meadows and across rocky sections, each turn revealing new perspectives on these ancient mountains.

Looking back, you’ll see the Alpe di Siusi from an entirely new angle, appreciating just how far you’ve traveled. Ahead, the Sella group rises in a massive block, while the needle-like peaks of the Puez-Odle group create a dramatic backdrop to the north. For those seeking an extra challenge, an optional higher route climbs to 2,700 meters, offering even more spectacular views of the Sella massif.

Your destination is Passo Sella, one of the major mountain passes connecting Val Gardena to Val di Fassa. Once a formidable obstacle for medieval traders, this pass is now a crossroads of hiking and cycling routes. As you descend toward the pass, civilization gradually reappears, but the sense of accomplishment from your three-day mountain journey remains strong. From here, transportation returns you to your base camp hotel, where a hot shower and comfortable bed await.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑360m ↓490m | 5 hours
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Val Gardena

Your Val Gardena adventure concludes this morning. After breakfast, you’re free to depart at your leisure or extend your stay to explore more of what this remarkable valley offers.

Want to dive even deeper into Val Gardena’s mountain paradise? Our extended tours add one or two spectacular day hikes from your comfortable base camp hotel, focusing on the magnificent Puez-Odle group. These are true base camp style days, meaning you’ll return to your hotel each evening with your luggage already waiting.

You can choose from either or both days:
Extra day option 1: Your hike ventures through the legendary Seceda region, home to some of the most photographed mountain scenery in all the Dolomites. Here, the Odle spires rise like a natural cathedral, their distinctive needle-like peaks creating a skyline that photographers and hikers travel across the world to witness.

Extra day option 2: This route explores the wild Vallunga gorge, a pristine valley cutting deep into the Puez-Odle highlands, where you’ll feel truly immersed in untouched alpine wilderness.

Both routes match the challenge level of the main hut-to-hut trek, offering the same rewarding mix of physical engagement and stunning scenery. These extensions are perfect for hikers who simply can’t get enough of Val Gardena’s magic and want to explore beyond the classic circuit. You’ll experience the best of both worlds – the adventure of mountain hiking combined with the comfort of returning to the same cozy hotel each evening.

View Tour

This is a Level 2 tour requiring basic physical fitness. You should be comfortable hiking up to 5 hours per day with elevation gains up to 820 meters. Previous mountain hiking experience is helpful but not required. Regular walking or cardio exercise in the months before your tour is recommended.

The 5-day tour includes the complete hut-to-hut trek. The 6-day tour consists of an additional day hike from your base camp hotel, exploring the Puez-Odle group. The 7-day tour includes two extra day hikes. All extensions maintain the same difficulty level as the main trek.

Mountain huts offer dormitory-style accommodation with bunk beds. Mattresses, blankets, and pillows are provided, but you must bring your own sleeping bag liner (sleep sack) as sheets are not included. Facilities are clean but basic, with shared bathrooms. Most huts charge a small fee (€3-8) for hot showers. Dinner is served communal-style with hearty local cuisine, and the atmosphere is warm and convivial.

We usually aim to reserve your accommodation at Selva. However, accommodation location is based on availability, depending on the time of the season and your group size.

  • Ortisei offers the most amenities, shops, and restaurants.
  • Santa Cristina provides a quieter village experience with beautiful surroundings.
  • Selva sits highest in the valley with an authentic alpine feel and is popular with outdoor enthusiasts. All three are excellent starting points for this hike.

Your guide constantly monitors weather conditions and may adjust routes or timing for safety. The Dolomites can experience rapid weather changes, so flexibility is built into the itinerary. In extreme conditions, alternative routes or rest days may be implemented. Your safety is always the priority.

Yes, this tour is available in both guided and self-guided formats. Self-guided tours include detailed route instructions, GPS navigation on your phone, 24-hour support, and pre-booked accommodations. However, guided tours offer the added value of local expertise, cultural insights, and the security of professional mountain leadership.

Your English-speaking local guide leads the group, sets an appropriate hiking pace, provides insights about the landscape and culture, ensures safety, and assists with any issues that arise. Guides are certified mountain professionals with extensive knowledge of the Dolomites.

The trails are well-maintained mountain paths requiring no technical climbing skills or special equipment. Some sections involve rocky terrain and steady elevation gain, but all trails are suitable for fit hikers with basic mountain experience. Proper hiking boots with ankle support are required.

Solo travelers are welcome! On group tours, you’ll be matched with other travelers in dormitory accommodations. For base camp hotel rooms, solo travelers typically share with another same-gender solo traveler (where possible), or you can opt for the single supplement to have your own room.

The tour operates from mid-May through September. July and August offer the warmest weather and longest days, but are also the busiest months. June and September typically have fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and can be excellent for hiking, though the weather is less predictable.

While not mandatory, hiking poles are highly recommended. They reduce strain on knees during descents and provide stability on uneven terrain. Collapsible poles are ideal for travel. Most outdoor shops in Val Gardena rent equipment if you prefer not to bring your own.

What To Expect

Picture yourself standing on Europe’s largest high-alpine meadow, surrounded by a 360-degree amphitheater of jagged Dolomite peaks. This is Alpe di Siusi, and it’s waiting for you. Our Val Gardena hiking tour takes you deep into one of the most photographed and beloved regions of the Dolomites, where centuries-old trails wind through landscapes that have inspired artists, mountaineers, and dreamers for generations.

This isn’t just another hiking tour. It’s a carefully crafted journey through a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, led by local guides who know these mountains like the lines on their palms. Over five days, you’ll traverse the vast Alpe di Siusi plateau, summit the legendary Sciliar massif with its distinctive twin towers, and circle the dramatic Sassolungo group. Each day brings new perspectives, from wildflower-filled meadows to high-altitude rocky terrain, all connected by well-maintained trails that have welcomed hikers for over a century.

What makes this tour special is the perfect balance between challenge and accessibility. These are genuine mountain hikes, taking around five hours each day, but they’re designed for hikers who want authentic alpine experiences without technical climbing. You’ll sleep in traditional mountain huts where dinner is served family-style and sunsets over the Rosengarten massif are complimentary. Your luggage travels separately, so you carry only a daypack. And because we keep our groups small, you’ll forge real connections with fellow adventurers who share your passion for the mountains.

Val Gardena serves as your gateway and base camp, offering a taste of authentic Ladin culture in villages where German, Italian, and the ancient Ladin language blend seamlessly. Whether you choose bustling Ortisei, quaint Santa Cristina, or alpine Selva, you’ll experience the warm hospitality that makes South Tyrol unforgettable. And for those who want more, our 6 and 7-day extensions add spectacular day hikes to the famous Seceda spires and the wild Vallunga gorge, giving you even deeper access to the Puez-Odle group’s hidden treasures.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
