Tour Itinerary

Arrive independently in San Martino di Castrozza, your base camp beneath the Pale di San Martino towers. When you arrive at your base camp hotel, your Self-Guided tour kit will be awaiting your collection.

This welcoming resort town combines alpine charm with a touch of Venetian flair. Wander its pretty streets, admire the peaks glowing pink at sunset, and prepare for your journey into the heart of the Dolomites.

Accommodation: Hotel in San Martino di Castrozza

Your journey begins as you step into the wild heart of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park – a sanctuary where silence, spruce forests, and alpine light set the rhythm of your hike. The well-marked trail leads from San Martino di Castrozza into a world of deep green woods, clear mountain air, and the sound of streams trickling through the valley. Passing the alpine pastures of Malga Ces, the path climbs gently toward the shimmering Colbricon Lakes, their turquoise waters perfectly reflecting the peaks above.

From here, the landscape opens dramatically: volcanic Lagorai rock gives way to the pale limestone walls of the Dolomites, two worlds meeting in one unforgettable view. As you arrive at Passo Rolle, surrounded by quiet mountains and endless sky, you’ll feel the first real taste of the adventure ahead – freedom, solitude, and the call of the high trail.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑770m ↓150m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut at Passo Rolle

Your second day on the trail invites you higher into open alpine country. From Passo Rolle, gentle meadows lead to Monte Castellaz, where a short detour rewards you with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama – the jagged Cimon della Pala, often called the “Matterhorn of the Dolomites,” rising proudly above the Pale range. Here, the mountains feel close enough to touch.

As you descend, the path threads through the forests of Val Venegia, once the timber source for Venice’s shipyards and construction industry. Keep watch for wildlife, you are bound to spot marmots, and maybe even ibex and chamois before reaching Passo Valles, where the scent of wood smoke and a hearty mountain dinner signal the comforts of your next hut.

Hiking: 8 km | ↑440 m ↓480 m | 3 hrs

Accommodation: Hut near Passo Valles

Today, you traverse one of the most scenic links of the journey – the gentle rise over Col Margherita connecting the Pale di San Martino with the Fassa Dolomites.

The trail winds through bright meadows splashed with rhododendron and alpine buttercups, the air filled with the hum of summer bees. Looking back, you’ll still see the serrated Pale peaks; ahead, the rounded slopes of the Monzoni glow in soft light. Near Passo San Pellegrino, quiet relics of World War I appear, old trenches now softened by grass and wildflowers. It’s a day of contrast: serene beauty resting on a landscape once marked by conflict.

Evening brings rest and warm hospitality in a welcoming hut framed by larch trees and open sky.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑280 m ↓330 m | 3 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut at Passo San Pellegrino

This is the day the Queen of the Dolomites reveals herself. Leaving the flowered Fuciade meadows, you follow the ancient Alta Via dei Pastori, the Shepherds’ Trail that once connected remote dairies. Each step carries echoes of alpine life – the ring of cowbells, the scent of grass drying in the sun.

The climb to Forca Rossa (2,490 m) unveils red-tinged slopes and a sweeping view across the Monzoni range. Then, descending into Val di Franzedaz, the trail curves beneath the colossal south face of Marmolada, a thousand-metre wall of pale stone rising into cloud. It’s a humbling stretch of trail, where the immense south wall of Marmolada looms overhead – a playground for skilled climbers and a true icon of the Dolomites.

Hiking: 11 km | ↑860 m ↓770 m | 5 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut near Marmolada

Your path turns upward again toward the wild heights of Pas de Ombreta (2,727 m) – the highest point of your trek.

The trail climbs from soft grass into a stark, luminous landscape of rock and sky. Here you trace a former wartime route; fragments of old trenches remain as quiet memorials. The final meters to the pass open to an immense panorama stretching across Val di Fassa to the distant Rosengarten towers.

The descent winds through scree and meadow to your hut at the foot of Marmolada, where twilight paints the peaks in silver. Step outside after dark – in the stillness, you may understand why legends say Princess Ombretta still wanders these slopes.

Hiking: 6 km | ↑640 m ↓690 m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut beneath Marmolada

The final stage unfolds gently but beautifully. Climb through soft pastures to Passo San Nicolò, a lush green mountain pass joining Val Contrin and Val San Nicolò. From its crest, the Sella Group commands the skyline, and the sharp Denti di San Nicolò pierce the blue horizon.

As you descend, the valley opens like a living postcard – wooden barns, bright wildflowers, and cowbells echoing across the hills. Time feels slower here; little has changed for centuries. Local legend tells of the Cervo di San Nicolò, a mystical deer guiding shepherds to safety – a fitting symbol of your own path through these mountains.

The trail ends where the valley meets Val di Fassa, completing your circle through the Dolomites’ most peaceful corners.

Hiking: 9 km | ↑380 m ↓670 m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Hotel in Val di Fassa

Enjoy a final mountain breakfast in your hotel as morning light washes over the peaks of Val di Fassa.

A week ago, you began in forests and gentle valleys; now you’ve crossed passes, meadows, and legends. Few routes in the Dolomites combine such variety with such tranquillity.

Whether you continue your travels or head home, you carry with you the quiet rhythm of these trails – the confidence, calm, and wonder that only a week in the high mountains can give.

7-Day Tour: The High-Pass Start
This shortened version skips the initial ascent from San Martino, beginning your journey directly at Passo Rolle (Day 3 of the standard route).

The Route: Bypassing the Colbricon lakes crossing.
The Option: If you still want to see the lakes, you can add a 2–3 hour detour from the pass.

9-Day Tour: The Marmolada & Sella Extension
This route extends the journey beyond the Marmolada group, finishing at the base of the iconic Sella Massif.

The Route: Instead of descending to Val San Nicolò, you’ll skirt the western side of Marmolada to reach Lake Fedaia.
Highlights: Hike the famous Viel dal Pan trail for the best views of the Marmolada glacier. Take the cable car from Passo Pordoi up to the Sella plateau for a 360° panorama of the Sassolungo.

10-Day Tour: The Complete “Lunar” Experience
This premier itinerary adds a dedicated day at the very beginning of the tour to explore the surreal, high-altitude landscapes of the Pale di San Martino. This will add an additional night in your base camp hotel.

The Route: For an easy introduction to your tour, you take the cable lift directly from town to the Pale di San Martino Plateau for a unique day hike across the mountain’s summit, before beginning the main trek.
Highlights: Traverse a vast, “lunar” limestone desert with the option to ascend two accessible peaks for 360-degree panoramas of the southern Dolomites.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Amazing!!
What a trip! From day one, everything ran so smoothly that we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. The guides were absolute pros and always thinking ahead so the group got the most out of each day. We had so many “wow” moments where you just have to stop and soak it all in. Great food, welcoming hotels, and a perfect balance of adventure and relax time. If you’re looking for a trip that’s easy, fun, and unforgettable, then I have no problem recommending Dolomites Active Tours.

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
