Tour Itinerary

Welcome to the heart of the Dolomites!

Your journey begins in San Martino di Castrozza, a charming alpine resort framed by the soaring towers of the Pale di San Martino. Settle into your base-camp hotel and take some time to relax after your travels. If you arrive early, stroll through the town’s pretty streets or stop for a pre-dinner aperitivo with mountain views. As evening falls, the Pale peaks glow in soft shades of rose and gold – a beautiful introduction to the landscapes that await you over the coming days.

Accommodation: Hotel in San Martino di Castrozza

Today, your hiking adventure begins as we set out through the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park – an unspoiled wilderness of spruce and larch forests, alpine meadows, and quiet mountain lakes.

The trail leads gently upward from San Martino toward Malga Ces, a traditional alpine farmstead that marks the transition from valley pastures to higher ground. From here, the scenery opens to sweeping views of the Lagorai ridges before we reach the shimmering Colbricon Lakes, whose still waters reflect the surrounding peaks. Continuing onward, we arrive at Passo Rolle, where dark volcanic rock meets pale Dolomite cliffs, a striking geological divide, and a beautiful setting for our first night in the high mountains.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑770m ↓150m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut at Passo Rolle

We rise early to greet the day with a steady ascent toward Monte Castellaz, rewarded by one of the Dolomites’ most iconic views – sunrise over the glowing spires of the Pale di San Martino. From the plateau, the panorama opens to the majestic Cimon della Pala, often called the “Matterhorn of the Dolomites” for its perfect pyramid shape. It’s a moment that captures the grandeur and drama of this range in a single sweep of sky and stone.

Leaving this postcard scene behind, we follow a gentle trail through alpine meadows alive with wildflowers before descending into the peaceful Val Venegia. The valley’s name recalls its historic connection to Venice, as timber from these forests once floated down to build the city’s ships and palaces. Today, the larch and spruce woods are home to marmots, ibex, and chamois. Your guide will help you spot them along the way as their calls echo across the slopes.

We finish the day at Passo Valles, where meadows and mountain views set the stage for a relaxing evening in a cozy alpine hut.

Hiking: 8 km | ↑440 m ↓480 m | 3 hrs

Accommodation: Hut near Passo Valles

Leaving the Pale range behind, overall today’s hike will be generally easy, you will traverse a ridge of wildflower meadows rising toward Col Margherita, where every turn reveals sweeping views of the Focobon, Vezzana, and Mulaz peaks.

Your guide may recount some of the region’s World War I stories as you pass old trenches near Passo San Pellegrino, once a fierce front line and now a peaceful meadow dotted with grazing cattle. The descent brings us through larch forests and open slopes glowing with rhododendrons, before reaching our next hut – known for its warm welcome and outstanding mountain cuisine.

This evening’s sunset paints the sky in orange and rose hues… pure Dolomites magic.

Hiking: 10 km | ↑280m ↓330m | 3 hrs

Accommodation: Hut at Passo San Pellegrino

Today’s route leads us toward the legendary Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites and long revered as the “Queen of the Dolomites.” We set out across the rolling Fuciade meadows, where wildflowers sway beneath wide blue skies, before climbing steadily along an open ridge toward the Alta Via dei Pastori – the ancient Shepherds’ Trail once used to link remote dairy farms. Each step carries echoes of Alpine life and tradition.

At Forca Rossa (2,490 m), the “Red Saddle,” fiery rock tones frame a panorama that suddenly opens eastward across the Monzoni peaks. From here, our path zigzags down a rocky slope into the quiet Val di Franzedaz, a hidden valley of pastures and forests. Soon, the towering south face of Marmolada appears – a colossal wall of pale limestone soaring nearly a thousand meters high. Skirting its base, we walk beneath one of the most breathtaking sights in the Dolomites before reaching our welcoming mountain hut for the night.

Hiking: 11 km | ↑ 860 m ↓ 770 m | 5 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut near Marmolada

Make sure to enjoy today’s hearty mountain breakfast! We begin one of the more challenging and memorable stages of the trek – the ascent to Pas de Ombreta (2,727 m), the highest point on our route. The trail climbs steadily from the hut, soon breaking above the tree line onto open grassy slopes with wide views of Sasso di Ombretta, a distinctive and much-loved peak of this region. As we gain altitude, the landscape transforms: soft meadows give way to rugged stone and pale scree, and the air grows crisp and thin.

It is not the steepness or elevation gain that makes it a challenge, but the slightly thinning air at altitude that makes the difference.

Our trail traces what was once a World War I communication route, and remnants of old trenches still cling to the rocky ridges, quiet witnesses to the hardships endured here more than a century ago. Near the pass, the terrain becomes wild and austere, but your guide ensures a steady and confident ascent. At the summit, a breathtaking panorama unfolds westward toward Val di Fassa and the distant Rosengarten Group glowing in the afternoon light.

The descent winds down a zigzagging path of loose rock that gradually softens into alpine pastures and sparse spruce forest. Soon, green meadows and the comforting sight of your next mountain hut appear below. Nestled at the base of Marmolada, this tranquil valley feels timeless – a place of whispered legends, where locals say the spirit of Princess Ombretta still roams beneath the moonlit peaks.

Hiking: 6 km | ↑ 640 m ↓ 690 m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Mountain hut beneath Marmolada

Our final hiking day begins with a gentle traverse from the upper Val Contrin toward the enchanting Val San Nicolò – a fitting finale to this journey through the legends of the Dolomites. The trail climbs gradually to Passo San Nicolò, a soft, grassy mountain pass branching from Col Ombert, where a sweeping panorama suddenly opens before us. From here, the jagged silhouettes of the Sella Group dominate the horizon, and the striking Denti di San Nicolò  – the “Teeth of San Nicolò”, rise proudly against the sky.

Crossing the broad alpine meadows, we descend into one of the Dolomites’ most idyllic valleys. Val San Nicolò feels suspended in time: emerald pastures dotted with grazing cows, wooden hay barns weathered by centuries, and the peaks of Monzoni glowing under the afternoon light. Local legends say this valley was once guarded by a magical deer – the Cervo di San Nicolò, who led shepherds to safety when storms swept through the mountains. Walking through this timeless landscape, surrounded by beauty and folklore, we feel the quiet satisfaction of a journey well-lived.

Our trek ends at the base of the valley, where the road to Val di Fassa gently brings us back to the modern world.

Hiking: 9 km | ↑ 380 m ↓ 670 m | 4 hrs

Accommodation: Hotel in Val di Fassa

After breakfast at your base camp hotel in Val di Fassa, it’s time to say goodbye to the mountains that have been your week of adventure. Together, you’ve crossed meadows, forests, and high passes – following quiet trails through some of the most beautiful and storied corners of the Dolomites.

This Trek of the Legends guided hiking tour has revealed landscapes both gentle and grand, from the soaring Pale peaks to the serene valleys below.

As you prepare to travel home or continue to your next destination, take a final look toward the mountains – a lasting reminder of the legends, laughter, and shared moments that defined your journey.

7-Day Tour: The High-Pass Adventure
Dive straight into the action by starting your journey at the breathtaking Passo Rolle!

The Route: This shortened itinerary skips day 2, the initial climb from San Martino via the Lakes.

Option: It is still possible to hike to the Colbricon Lakes by following this itinerary, if you are open to a 2-3 hour detour. A visit to Colbricon Lakes will see you surrounded by a striking Alpine landscape of diverse mountains and peaks.

9-Day Tour: The Marmolada & Sella Finale
Keep the momentum going by extending your trek beyond the Marmolada group to the mighty Sella Massif.

The Route: Instead of heading down to the valley, you’ll skirt the western face of the Marmolada to reach Lake Fedaia.

Highlights: Hike the legendary Viel dal Pan trail for front-row seats to the Marmolada glacier, then we highly recommend you take the cable car at Passo Pordoi for 360° views atop the Sella plateau.

10-Day Tour: The Ultimate “Lunar” Experience
Go all-in with an extra day at the start to explore one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth.

The Route: Kick things off with an easy-access day trip via cable lift from town, exploring the summit of the Pale di San Martino Plateau before the main trek begins.

Highlights: Discover the “Lunar Plateau” – a vast, otherworldly limestone desert, with the chance to climb two accessible peaks for incredible panoramas of the southern Dolomites.

What To Expect

Discover the heart of the Dolomites on our Trek of the Legends guided hiking tour, an easy-to-moderate hut-to-hut journey through landscapes steeped in natural beauty and folklore. This fully guided adventure follows a classic alpine route connecting San Martino di Castrozza, Val di Fiemme, and Val di Fassa – regions known for their pristine trails, timeless traditions, and legendary mountain hospitality. Away from the crowds, we explore quiet paths that reveal a more intimate side of the Dolomites, walking in the footsteps of locals who first mapped this route two decades ago to unite their homelands by trail.

Led by your expert mountain guide, you’ll hike through a stunning mosaic of terrain – from silent spruce and larch forests to high alpine meadows and glacial lakes. The journey carries us from the dramatic limestone towers of the Pale di San Martino to the green ridges of Monzoni and the mighty south face of Marmolada, known as the “Queen of the Dolomites.” The geological contrasts along the way are fascinating: at Passo Rolle, the fiery red volcanic rock of the Lagorai range meets the soft golden hues of Dolomite limestone, forming one of the region’s most photographed horizons.

Each day offers a different perspective on these mountains, not just their grandeur, but their history and stories. As we walk, our guide brings to life the ancient legends of this land: tales of playful forest spirits, noble kings, and the mischievous red-clad elf Salvanel, who is said to have once hidden among these woods to trick passing travelers. Today, his image appears carved in wood at mountain huts and along forest paths – a whimsical reminder that magic still lingers in the Dolomites.

Our route follows comfortable, well-marked trails at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,200 meters, designed for hikers seeking a rewarding yet accessible alpine experience. Daily treks average three to five hours, leaving ample time to rest, take photos, or simply sit back and admire the peaks glowing pink in the evening light. The most demanding climb, the ascent to Pas de Ombreta beneath Marmolada’s vertical wall, is well paced and supported by your guide, ensuring a safe and steady experience for all.

Accommodation is an essential part of this journey’s charm. We stay in authentic mountain huts, some closer to cozy alpine inns than refuges – where hearty meals, laughter, and breathtaking views define each evening. At both ends of the trek, comfortable 3-star hotels in San Martino di Castrozza and Val di Fassa provide restful nights before and after your time in the high mountains. All logistics are seamlessly handled: luggage transfers, private trailhead transport, and on-the-ground coordination so you can focus entirely on the trail.

Whether you’re drawn by the legends, the landscapes, or the camaraderie of a small guided group, this trek captures the essence of the Dolomites, a place where stories, peaks, and people are deeply intertwined. Experience the beauty, tranquility, and spirit of the mountains on one of Italy’s most rewarding and least crowded hut-to-hut routes.

Our small family group (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had an AMAZING time with Dolomite Active. Our trip in the Dolomites is one of most memorable active family holidays!! 😁 We chose a multisport 7 day tour and experienced so many beautiful places, including Marmolada and Lake Garda. Our tour guides were all very professional, knowledgeable, but also kind, fun and customer oriented. They even arranged a hike instead of a via ferrata on one of the days. We really appreciate the personal service and can't wait to come back!! Thank you Dolomite Active team!!! 😁

Excellent organization! Everything was very well organised and we didn't have to think about a thing. We did the multisport (hiking, cycling and ferrata) over 7 days. There was a good mix of activity and downtime and we ate lots of delicious mountain foods. Hotels were very good, especially the smaller family run places. The mountain bikes and via ferrata equipment was all top notch. The guides were very professional. I highly recommend Dolomites Active Tours.

We have hiked a lot this last 3-4 years, but our memories of the Dolomites are the most special. We chose a self guided hiking trip in the Brenta Dolomites. The full nine day tour seemed too long, but we were able to modify our trip to a shorter 7 day version. Thanks to the team at Dolomites Active for helping with all our questions. We were given everything, including detailed route guidance and maps - it made the trip very stress free. As for the huts we stayed in 4 different places. Waking up each day to a different view and every evening we ate delicious local foods, washed down with Italian wine! The shared bedrooms and bathrooms are not so bad... I can only say it is by far better than camping! The Dolomites was so beautiful, we are desperate to go back, we hope it will be soon.

Justin has been so helpful in planning our Dolomites hiking tour, he was always there answering to all my questions, was nice to face time each other and talk about the tour rather than just over emails. I would definitely book future tour with Justin only, extremely the best customer service.
